For leaders facing weak grassroots structures, internal party rivalries, or uncertain prospects in a crowded opposition field, joining the broad-based government or UDA becomes an attractive insurance policy.
Effective coalition-building, he notes, often hinges on such pragmatic shifts, with past kingmakers and regional powerbrokers repeatedly reshaping political odds.
Kagwanja suggests these defections will accelerate as 2027 approaches and nomination battles intensify. Opposition unity remains fragile amid competing ambitions and disagreements over a single flag-bearer.
Leaders calculating that a divided opposition cannot unseat an incumbent with incumbency advantages and a record of infrastructure delivery may choose the safer path of alignment with Ruto.
His assessment underscores Kenya’s tradition of fluid alliances, where political realignment often trumps rigid opposition stands.
