Nyota Ndogo has built a music catalogue across East Africa for more than two decades. Her songs have sound tracked weddings, heartbreaks, and everyday life. However, two tracks stand out among her biggest classics: Nibebe ft Nonini and Watu na Viatu.
Speaking during an interview with Wasafi FM, the Kenyan music icon opened up about the real stories behind the two songs. While fans have embraced them for years, Nyota revealed that each track came from a personal chapter of her life.
The Pain Behind Watu na Viatu
For years, listeners have sung along to Watu na Viatu without knowing the story that inspired it. Nyota Ndogo revealed that the song was born from betrayal. Before becoming one of East Africa’s biggest stars, she worked as a housemaid for a female musician. She cleaned the house, washed dishes, and cooked meals in exchange for singing lessons.
“I used to wash her house, wash her dishes, and cook for her just so I could learn techniques for singing certain songs,” – Nyota Ndogo.
At the time, Nyota admired the singer and hoped to build a career like hers. However, everything changed after Nyota won the Kisima Awards as Best Female Artist East Africa. Neighbors congratulated her former mentor after seeing Nyota’s success in newspapers. Instead of celebrating, the woman reportedly tore up the newspapers and dismissed Nyota’s achievement.
According to Nyota, the rejection hurt deeply. She walked into the recording studio while still emotional. Her producer already had a beat waiting, but she had not written any lyrics. Instead, she sang straight from the heart.”When I sang Watu na Viatu, I sang it as a freestyle. I did not write it. Verse one up to the chorus came while I was crying.” Nyota revealed.
Ironically, Nyota says the woman who inspired the song still loves it today without knowing it was written about her.
Why Nibebe Remains Her Favourite
While Watu na Viatu came from heartbreak, Nibebe tells a completely different story. Nyota says it remains her favorite song because its message is timeless.”Nibebe is my personal favourite because love never ends,” she said. She believes the song continues to connect with listeners because it celebrates love without fear or apology.
The lyrics, “Nakupenda sana sitoficha, kama kukupenda ni makosa sitaki kuwa sawa duniani,” have remained popular across generations. According to Nyota, many fans have approached her over the years to say they used the song’s lyrics to express their feelings and even propose to their partners. “Some people tell me they found their wives using the words from Nibebe. Today they have families because of that song.”
For the veteran singer, that impact matters more than chart success. She says helping people build relationships gives the song even greater meaning.
A Love Song Written During Uncertain Times
Surprisingly, Nyota wrote Nibebe during one of the most difficult periods in her personal life. Although the song celebrates love, she says her own relationship with the father of her child was struggling at the time, “I was in love, but the relationship was unstable.”
Despite the uncertainty, she transformed those emotions into one of Kenya’s most enduring love songs. During the same period, she also wrote the emotional track Natafuta, reflecting another side of her experiences.
Today, Nyota Ndogo marks 26 years in the music industry. Her journey has taken her from working as a housemaid to becoming one of East Africa’s most respected artists. She continues to perform across the region and was invited to Tanzania’s Bongo Fleva at 30 celebrations in recognition of her influence beyond Kenya.
