Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has received a major boost after former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua reportedly identified him as his preferred candidate ahead of the 2027 General Election.
According to a report by The Star, Gachagua is leaning towards backing Kalonzo to lead the opposition outfit in a united bid to unseat President William Ruto.
Kalonzo indicate that the former DP is already considering mobilizing his supporters to rally behind his presidential ambition.
Earlier this month, Gachagua took a 45-day leave to consult widely with his political base and deliberate on the most effective strategy for the upcoming contest. During this period, he is expected to engage key stakeholders to shape the direction of the opposition.
Gachagua has also hinted at an intensified political campaign, promising an effort “ten times bigger” than the one he mounted for President Ruto in the 2022 elections.
Despite these report, the opposition coalition has yet to officially name its flagbearer. High-level meetings and retreats are ongoing, with leaders seeking consensus on key issues such as regional vote balance and legal considerations surrounding Gachagua’s political future.
Gachagua has maintained that unity remains the opposition’s strongest weapon, emphasizing the need to field a single candidate against the Kenya Kwanza administration.
