Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations are intensifying investigations into the brutal murder of 35-year-old nanny Susan Wanjiku Nyambura, whose body was discovered just two days after she had started a new job in the Cieko area of Kasarani, Nairobi.
The shocking case has left investigators and the victim’s family searching for answers, with a mysterious clue found at the scene now forming a central part of the probe.
Susan’s body was found on May 12 at the entrance of her employer’s residence. Authorities said she had sustained severe injuries, and a post-mortem examination later established that she died from traumatic blunt force injuries to the head.
According to investigators, the scene inside the two-room apartment pointed to a violent struggle. Clothes were strewn across the floor, indicating what detectives believe was a chaotic confrontation. Among the items recovered was a photograph bearing a red stain on the lips, an object investigators now consider potentially significant in reconstructing the events leading to the killing.
Neighbours have also provided statements that could prove crucial to the case. Residents claimed that the prime suspect displayed unusual behaviour on the day of the incident, reportedly asking a neighbour to take care of her child before leaving abruptly.
Witnesses further alleged that the same woman unsuccessfully sought assistance from a motorcycle rider shortly before the tragedy unfolded. Minutes later, screams were reportedly heard coming from the apartment. Concerned residents rushed to the scene only to discover Susan lying dead.
Detectives have since tracked a phone signal linked to the suspect to Makueni County, suggesting a possible escape route. Authorities believe the suspect has been attempting to evade arrest by frequently changing appearance and using disguises, including wearing hijabs.
The DCI has appealed to members of the public with information that could lead to the suspect’s arrest to come forward, as efforts to track down the fugitive continue.
The gruesome murder has left the victim’s family devastated and has sparked concern among Kenyans over the safety of domestic workers, with many calling for swift justice and a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding Susan Wanjiku Nyambura’s death.
