David Osiany has announced the launch of an annual award in memory of Sheryl Onderi, a Grade 10 student from Utumishi Girls Academy who died in the tragic dormitory fire.

Osiany made the announcement during Sheryl’s burial in Narok County, where he joined grieving family members, friends, and mourners in paying tribute to the young student whose life was cut short in the devastating incident that claimed several lives and left many others injured.

Speaking at the emotional ceremony, Osiany said he was deeply moved by Sheryl’s story and the pain her family has endured. He noted that he had no prior personal connection to the family but felt compelled to support them after learning about the tragedy.

He promised to continue standing with the family even after the burial, saying that grief does not end with the funeral.

In his remarks, Osiany also strongly condemned the actions that led to the fire, calling for greater responsibility among students and parents.

He urged parents to guide and discipline their children from an early age, warning that poor choices can lead to irreversible consequences.

His comments sparked mixed reactions among mourners, but he maintained that accountability is important in preventing similar tragedies in the future.

The highlight of his announcement was the introduction of the “Sheryl Onderi Award,” which will be given annually at Utumishi Girls Academy.

The award will recognize the best student in Biology and will include a cash prize of KSh 10,000, funded through his foundation. He said the initiative is meant to preserve Sheryl’s memory and inspire academic excellence among students.

School officials and family members welcomed the gesture, describing it as a meaningful way to honour Sheryl’s life and legacy. They expressed hope that the award will motivate learners while keeping her memory alive within the school community.

The tragedy at Utumishi Girls Academy continues to draw national attention, with calls for investigations and improved safety measures in schools growing louder.
