A section of Nyeri residents briefly broke into celebration on Monday as a three-judge bench delivered its ruling on former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s impeachment case.
The moment of jubilation came when the judges initially outlined their findings, indicating that the Senate had, in fact, violated Gachagua’s constitutional rights during the impeachment process.
This revelation sparked hope among locals, with many interpreting it as a sign that the court might overturn the impeachment.
For a short while, optimism swept through parts of Nyeri, as residents anticipated a verdict in Gachagua’s favor.
However, the mood quickly shifted after the bench clarified its final position.
Despite acknowledging procedural violations by the Senate, the judges ruled that the breach was not substantial enough to invalidate the impeachment.
According to the bench, once a successor has been lawfully appointed, the process cannot be reversed by the courts.
