President William Ruto has announced plans to rename Wajir Stadium to Ahmed Khalif Stadium in honour of the late Wajir West Member of Parliament, Ahmed Khalif, in recognition of his contribution to leadership and service to the people of Wajir County.
The announcement was made during his speech at the 63rd Madaraka Day celebrations held at , which recently underwent major upgrades ahead of hosting the national event for the first time in Northern Kenya.
President Ruto said the decision to rename the facility was a tribute to leaders who have played a significant role in advancing development and representation for communities in the region. He noted that Ahmed Khalif’s legacy in public service and advocacy for local development would be remembered through the renaming of the modernised stadium.
The late legislator, who served as Wajir West MP, was widely recognised for his efforts in championing education, infrastructure development, and improved access to government services in the region. His death was seen as a major loss to both Wajir County and the broader political leadership in Northern Kenya.
Speaking during the national celebrations, Ruto emphasised the importance of inclusivity and national recognition of leaders from all regions, adding that such gestures strengthen unity and national identity.
The Madaraka Day event, held under the theme “Education, Skills and the Future,” brought together top government officials, including First Lady Rachel Ruto and Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, alongside thousands of residents who attended the historic celebrations.
If implemented, the renaming will see the stadium permanently bear Ahmed Khalif’s name, cementing his legacy within one of the region’s most significant public facilities. The move has been widely viewed as part of the government’s broader efforts to honour regional leaders and promote equitable national representation.
The announcement was met with applause from attendees, with many describing it as a fitting tribute to a leader remembered for his dedication to public service in Wajir County.
