Football fans tuning in for today’s UEFA Champions League final between Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain will need to adjust their schedules — UEFA has shifted the kickoff time three hours earlier than tradition, in a landmark change to the sport’s biggest club match.
The 2026 Champions League final at the Puskás Aréna in Budapest, Hungary kicks off at 18:00 CET on Saturday, May 30 — earlier than in previous years. That means a 5 p.m. BST start, moved forward from the long-standing 8 p.m. BST slot.
UEFA was clear about the reasons. The governing body said the decision was made to “enhance the overall matchday experience” for fans, teams and host cities, noting that games extending deep into Saturday night have posed logistical challenges in the past.
UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin explained: “The UEFA Champions League final is the highlight of the football season, and the new kick-off time will make it even more accessible, inclusive, and impactful for everyone involved. An earlier kick-off on a Saturday means an earlier finish — regardless of extra time or penalties — and offers fans the opportunity to enjoy the rest of the evening reflecting on the game of the season.”
The change also has global broadcasting benefits. For millions of fans across Asia, Champions League finals traditionally meant staying awake at uncomfortable hours. With this adjustment, the experience becomes significantly easier, potentially boosting international audiences.
Arsenal are seeking to become the 25th club to lift the trophy, while defending champions PSG are bidding to retain the title they won for the first time in 2025.
UEFA has confirmed this earlier kickoff is a permanent change, not a one-time experime
