Director of the Homicide Investigations Unit at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Martin Nyaguto, on Thursday visited Utumishi Girls Academy in Gilgil, Nakuru County, where a tragic early morning fire claimed the lives of 16 students.
The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Thursday morning, has left the nation in shock, with authorities launching a full-scale investigation into the cause of the inferno. The fire also left several other students injured, some of whom are receiving treatment in nearby hospitals.
Nyaguto’s visit formed part of the ongoing high-level probe into the tragedy, as homicide investigators work alongside other forensic experts to establish whether the fire was accidental or the result of criminal activity. Security agencies have cordoned off parts of the school as evidence collection continues.
Speaking during the visit, investigators were seen assessing the affected dormitory and documenting key areas believed to be crucial in reconstructing the sequence of events leading to the deadly blaze. Officials also engaged school administrators as part of preliminary fact-finding efforts.
The Ministry of Education and the National Police Service have both expressed concern over the incident, terming it a major loss to the education sector. Families of the victims have been notified, with counselling services being offered to affected students and staff.
