St. Cecilia Misikhu Girls Secondary School is mourning the sudden death of one of its teachers who collapsed and died shortly after attending a school-related function at a hotel, an incident that has left colleagues, students and family members in deep shock.
According to reports, the teacher had successfully completed the official engagement and was at the hotel when he suddenly collapsed moments later. He was rushed for medical attention but was pronounced dead on arrival, sending waves of grief through the school community and the wider education sector.
A postmortem examination later revealed that the teacher died from a ruptured heart attack linked to pressure-related complications. The findings have reignited concerns over stress and health challenges facing teachers, with education stakeholders warning that heavy workloads and lifestyle pressures may be exposing educators to serious medical risks.
Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) Bungoma branch executive secretary Augustine Kundu Luketelo expressed sorrow following the tragedy and urged teachers to take their health seriously through regular medical check-ups.
“We are very saddened to have lost our teacher. A postmortem reveals he died of pressure,” he said, noting that conditions such as hypertension, diabetes and stress-related illnesses are becoming increasingly common among teachers and often remain undetected until it is too late.
The teacher’s wife, whom he had been married to for 20 years, described the loss as devastating. She recalled receiving the heartbreaking news at the hospital and said the family is still struggling to accept the sudden tragedy. The deceased leaves behind four young children.
Teachers, students and education officials across the region have continued to send condolence messages to the bereaved family while calling for improved staff welfare and health monitoring systems within schools. Many believe early detection and proper health support could help prevent similar tragedies in the future as pressure mounts within the teaching profession.
