A couple from Kiambu County has spoken publicly after their vehicle was destroyed during protests in Githurai, recounting the frightening moments that led to the incident.
The attack occurred on Monday, May 18, 2026, during demonstrations and transport disruptions linked to rising fuel prices announced by the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority. The protests affected several parts of the country, with public transport operations disrupted in multiple towns and cities.
According to the couple, identified as Priscilla and her husband, they had left home to carry out errands, including purchasing construction materials in Kamakis. Priscilla explained that they did not anticipate any danger because they believed the demonstrations taking place across the country were peaceful.
However, the situation reportedly changed after they reached Githurai, where protesters had blocked sections of the road. Priscilla said her husband was driving their Mazda CX-5 when tensions suddenly escalated.
She claimed that some protesters became hostile after noticing campaign materials linked to the United Democratic Alliance inside the vehicle. According to her, this appeared to trigger the confrontation that followed.
Priscilla explained that the crowd quickly surrounded the car, forcing her husband to flee for safety. Moments later, the vehicle was allegedly set on fire and completely destroyed.
Despite the frightening ordeal, she confirmed that her husband escaped without serious physical injuries. However, the incident left both of them emotionally distressed and shocked by the sudden violence.
The couple later reported the matter at Kasarani Police Station and expressed hope that investigations would help identify those responsible for the destruction of their vehicle.
The incident has added to growing concerns over escalating violence and destruction witnessed during recent demonstrations connected to rising fuel prices and economic frustrations across the country.
