Protest and police

As protests over soaring fuel prices spread across different parts of the country, one unexpected scene managed to cut through the tension — a pickup truck packed with cooked rice heading toward crowds of protesters and stranded commuters.

Videos shared online showed the vehicle loaded with huge sufurias of steaming rice as it slowly moved through protest-hit areas. At a time when roads were blocked, matatus grounded, and businesses shutting early, the simple act immediately caught people’s attention online.

While confrontations with police, burning tyres, and tear gas dominated most headlines, this moment offered something different. Witnesses said the food was being taken to demonstrators, boda boda riders, and commuters who had spent hours stuck on the roads without access to meals.

Social media users quickly turned the footage viral, with many praising the unknown donors behind the gesture. “This is the Kenya we know,” one user commented. Another wrote, “People are angry, yes, but they still refuse to let others go hungry.”

The nationwide strike was triggered by a fresh increase in fuel prices that pushed transport costs even higher for ordinary wananchi already struggling with the high cost of living. In several towns, businesses remained closed as transport operators protested rising operating expenses.

But amid the frustration and uncertainty, the rice-filled pickup became a symbol of how communities often step up for each other during difficult moments. For many Kenyans online, the scene reflected a familiar reality — when things get tough, ordinary citizens are usually the first to help one another survive.

As negotiations between transport operators and government officials continue, the now-viral rice truck has become one of the most talked-about images from the protests, reminding many that solidarity sometimes looks as simple as sharing a meal.
