In a move that has captured the attention of Nairobi’s transport enthusiasts, Tugi—one of the two matatus owned by comedian Njugush—has been spotted undergoing an extensive aesthetic revamp. The redesign comes at a high-profile moment for the content creator, following the recent public confirmation that he and Celestine Ndinda have mutually and respectfully separated.
From Standard Colors to “Nganya” Style
A photo circulating on social media since Friday, May 1, reveals the matatu, which operates under the Super Metro Sacco, inside a professional painting booth. While Tugi and its sibling vehicle, Toriah (both named after Njugush’s sons), originally donned the signature grey and orange Super Metro livery, the comedian is now pushing for a more customized look.
The vehicle is being transformed into what is known in street slang as a “Nganya”—a souped-up matatu defined by bold artistry and vibrant lighting. The leaked images show workers applying a fresh exterior coat, with a distinct airbrushed portrait already visible on the front door. The interior also appears to be receiving an upgrade, with neon purple lighting seen illuminating the cabin.
Defying the Graffiti Ban
The timing of Tugi’s makeover is particularly notable, occurring just a week after a controversial court ruling that outlawed graffiti artwork on public service vehicles. This legal shift has sparked a massive uproar among matatu culture enthusiasts and leaders who view the artwork as a vital part of Nairobi’s urban identity.
Despite the marital shift and the new legal hurdles facing the “nganya” industry, Njugush seems committed to maintaining his presence on the Kitengela route with a vehicle that stands out. As he and Celestine pivot toward a new chapter of co-parenting and individual growth, the transformation of Tugi serves as a visible symbol of change within his expanding business portfolio.
