A police officer attached to former Nairobi governor Mike Sonko is recovering after being attacked and robbed of his service weapon in Muchatha, Kiambu County.
Police reports indicate that the officer, who serves under the Security of Government Buildings (SGB) unit in Nairobi, was ambushed at Guango bus stop around midnight while heading home to Banana on a motorcycle.
He said two men on another motorcycle struck him with a wooden stick before speeding off.
Together with his rider, the officer pursued them, not knowing the chase was a trap.
When they blocked the suspects, an argument broke out and more riders joined in, forming a hostile crowd.
To disperse them, the officer fired a shot in the air. Instead of retreating, the mob grew more aggressive, overpowering him and knocking him down.
During the assault, the attackers stole his Beretta pistol loaded with 14 rounds and his mobile phone.
The officer sustained head injuries and was rushed to hospital, where he was admitted for a day.
Investigations are ongoing, with authorities promising to recover the stolen firearm and bring the attackers to justice.
