Former Trade Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria has issued a stark warning to President William Ruto, claiming that the political temperature in Mt Kenya has shifted dramatically and that the region’s six million votes may flow to a single opposition candidate in 2027 unless deep-seated frustrations are addressed.

Speaking during an interview on Citizen TV on Tuesday, April 14, Kuria said he has gathered information from villagers across Murang’a and other counties showing growing dissatisfaction with the Kenya Kwanza administration.

“What I am hearing is that people feel they are under siege. They are saying that in 2027, all six million votes from the region will go to a single candidate — not necessarily President Ruto. They want a leader who will make the country work for everyone,” Kuria explained.

The former Gatundu South MP specifically mentioned Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale, accusing him of making remarks that portrayed Mt Kenya as a region that considers itself superior. He argued that such statements have angered voters and created a sense of betrayal among a community that overwhelmingly supported Ruto in 2022.

Kuria insisted that the ground reality has changed since the last election. He predicted that Mt Kenya could unite behind a different presidential candidate if frustrations are not addressed before the polls.

The former CS also opened up about his resignation from government, clarifying that he was not sacked as a senior economic advisor but stepped down voluntarily. He revealed that President Ruto was unhappy with his decision but respected it.

Kuria said the Saba Saba protests, marked by violence and destruction, played a major role in his decision to quit. He narrated how watching the unrest from abroad left him deeply disturbed.

Kuria’s warning adds to a growing chorus of voices suggesting that Ruto’s grip on Mt Kenya — which delivered 3.5 million votes for him in 2022, is weakening.

If Kuria’s assessment is accurate, Ruto faces an uphill battle to retain his most reliable voting bloc. The President has time to respond, but as the former CS has made clear: the ground is already shifting.
