Githunguri MP Hon. Gathoni Wamuchomba has sharply criticised former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, accusing him of turning the recent funeral of Ol Kalou MP David Kiaraho into a platform for political attacks and personal ambitions.

In a strongly worded post on X on Monday, Wamuchomba, a key ally of President William Ruto, claimed Gachagua — commonly referred to as “Wamunyoro” — mentioned National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah more than 21 times during the burial service in Nyandarua County. She alleged that these repeated references overshadowed tributes to the deceased MP and the grieving family.

“Wamunyoro’s game is simple: he wants a handshake with President Ruto,” Wamuchomba wrote. “His strategy is to viciously attack those hardliners who have the president’s ear, so that he can blackmail the president with Mlima votes. Otherwise why would he mention Ichung’wa over 21 times in one funeral event?”

She added that Gachagua appeared distracted and “high on something,” and even failed to offer condolences to the bereaved family. The post concluded with a pointed remark: “Bitterness is like cancer it eats the host.”

The accusations stem from Gachagua’s speech at the requiem and burial of MP David Kiaraho earlier this month, where he publicly criticised Ichung’wah and other leaders. The event has sparked a fierce exchange, with Ichung’wah and other MPs condemning the use of funerals for political grandstanding.

This latest clash highlights the deepening divisions within the Mt Kenya region following Gachagua’s impeachment as Deputy President in 2024.

Gachagua, who retains strong influence in the area through his Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), has been vocal against certain Ruto allies, while Wamuchomba and Ichung’wah remain firmly aligned with the Kenya Kwanza administration.

Wamuchomba’s post quickly gained traction online, drawing hundreds of reactions as Kenyans debate the growing trend of politicising funeral gatherings ahead of the 2027 General Election.
