Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations have arrested a suspected gang leader linked to a criminal syndicate that has been targeting people in Nairobi entertainment spots and stealing from them after drugging them.
The arrest followed an intelligence-led operation after a victim reported the matter at Embakasi Police Station.The victim told police that he had been socialising at a club in Nairobi when he was approached and hugged by a woman he did not know after a pool game.
Shortly after the encounter, he started feeling dizzy and decided to leave with the woman before he lost consciousness.
Police said that when the victim regained consciousness, he found that several items had been stolen from his house.
The stolen items included two laptops, a Samsung S22 phone, cash amounting to Ksh 168000 and jewellery valued at Ksh 50000.Detectives later tracked the suspect to the Kihunguro area in Ruiru, where detectives said they had arrested a suspect linked to a stupefying and theft syndicate targeting unsuspecting revellers within Nairobi and its environs.
They said the arrest followed an intelligence-led operation triggered by a report lodged at Embakasi Police Station.
During a search at the house, detectives recovered many suspected stolen items, including dozens of mobile phones, laptops and an iPad. Some of the recovered items were identified by the victim.
Police said the suspect is believed to be part of an organised gang that uses a drug commonly known as ‘mchele’ to drug victims before stealing from them.
Investigations are still ongoing as detectives work to arrest more members of the gang.
