Siaya County Governor James Orengo has announced expanded access to subsidized tractor hire services, bringing relief to farmers across the region amid Kenya’s intense political climate heading into the 2027 elections.
In a recent social media post, Orengo confirmed that the county’s tractor hire program is now operational in all sub-counties. Farmers can book and register for the services through their local Ward Agricultural Officers. He urged residents to prepare early and adopt smarter farming practices to maximize productivity during the upcoming planting season.
The initiative, a key pillar of Orengo’s Nyalore manifesto, aims to boost agricultural mechanization, reduce manual labor burdens, and enhance food security in Siaya. Subsidized rates—previously reported as low as KSh 2,500 to KSh 3,000 per service—make the tractors affordable compared to private options. The county has invested significantly in the program, including procuring additional tractors worth millions of shillings and distributing them across constituencies like Alego-Usonga, Ugenya, Ugunja, Bondo, Gem, and Rarieda.
Reports indicate thousands of farmers have already benefited directly and indirectly from the services, improving timely land preparation and increasing yields. The expansion aligns with broader efforts to support smallholder farmers through mechanization, certified seeds, and other inputs, contributing to economic growth in a county reliant on agriculture and fisheries.
Orengo’s announcement stands out as a positive development-focused message in a period dominated by heated national debates, coalition realignments, and election rhetoric. By prioritizing grassroots agricultural support, the governor demonstrates tangible governance delivery, potentially strengthening his administration’s standing among rural voters.
As long rains approach and political temperatures rise, such initiatives highlight how devolved governments continue to drive local progress despite national challenges. Farmers in Siaya are encouraged to contact their ward officers promptly to secure bookings and prepare for a productive season.
