Doctor Kizza Besigye a Ugandan opposition leader was once President Yoweri Museveni’s personal doctor during the early years. During the Ugandan Bush War Besigye served as a medical officer for the National Resistance Army (NRA), the rebel group led by Museveni. His role was primarily to provide medical care to wounded fighters, including Museveni himself as he was highly trusted within the movement and became Museveni’s personal physician during the struggle against Milton Obote’s government. After the National Resistance Army victory in Museveni became Uganda’s president, and Besigye was appointed to various government positions including Minister of State for Internal Affairs and National Political Commissar. However, he publicly criticized Museveni’s leadership accusing him of abandoning democratic principles and entrenching himself in power, this marked the beginning of Besigye’s opposition to Museveni.Besigye has since run against Museveni multiple times, becoming one of Uganda’s most prominent opposition figures as his political career has been marked by arrests and allegations of election rigging against Museveni’s government.
