A Nakuru mother has appealed for urgent government intervention after her son was sentenced to prison in Thailand weeks after the family suffered another tragic loss.
Antony Mwangi Maina was jailed for two and a half years after a Thai court found him guilty of illegal entry and possession of a passport with an irregular entry stamp. His mother, Monica Wanjiru, says the circumstances surrounding his arrest remain deeply distressing to the family.
According to information shared by Nakuru Trends, Antony left Kenya on October 10, 2025, after a female acquaintance assured him of employment opportunities abroad.
The journey was meant to change his life but instead ended in his arrest shortly after arrival in Thailand.
Monica maintains that her son was unaware of any irregularities in his travel documents.
Although the offences attract stiffer penalties under Thai law, the court reduced the sentence after Antony admitted the charges. The ruling has left the family devastated and struggling to understand how their hopes turned into a painful ordeal.
The imprisonment has compounded grief for Monica, who is still mourning the death of her younger son, Peter Kahembe.
Peter died in July 2025 after being involved in a road accident in Nakuru while returning from school.
The back-to-back tragedies have placed immense emotional and financial strain on the family.
Monica has now called on the Kenyan government, the embassy in Bangkok, Nakuru leaders and well-wishers to help secure legal assistance, facilitate communication and explore possible options that could ease her son’s situation.
She continues to hope that timely intervention will reunite her family and bring relief after months of heartbreak.
