CHADEMA’s Vice Chair, John Heche, has claimed that President Samia Suluhu’s government is willing to release CHADEMA Chair, Tundu Lissu from jail.

Heche has alleged that Samia’s administration has given Lissu one condition before his release, which is to leave Tanzania and go into exile in another country.

He says this is why Lissu’s woes have worsened in recent days, including him not being presented in court despite the state’s claim to have enough evidence in his treason case.

Heche has stated that this plot won’t work, reminding Samia and her officers that Lissu is a Tanzanian by birth and won’t be forced into exile and daring the government to proceed with the case.

“Bring our Chairman to court and stop using the court to hurt people whose arguments you have failed to answer. Our Chairman will not accept any kind of your influence, he cannot leave the country as you want, this is his home and he cannot leave on your terms,” he claims on X.

The politician says that the government’s use of the judiciary to punish opponents like Lissu is a serious miscalculation, as it trains citizens to also defy and ignore the courts.

In his view, the consequences might also include reduction in number of foreign investors seeking to invest in Tanzania.

“Who do you expect to follow the law when you yourself can’t do it? How do you convince citizens to respect these kind of a courts? Who would come to invest in a country where courts behave in this manner?”
