Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi has confirmed the release of eight Kenyans who were being detained in Tanzania, bringing relief to families that had been living in fear.
Speaking on Thursday, Mudavadi revealed that diplomatic talks between Nairobi and Dodoma led to the safe release of the citizens, who had been held over unclear circumstances. He assured Kenyans that the government remains committed to protecting its citizens wherever they are.
“The Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs has been closely engaging with Tanzanian authorities, and I can now confirm that eight Kenyans who were in custody have been released,” Mudavadi said.
The Prime CS also noted that efforts are ongoing to resolve the remaining issues surrounding the arrests that sparked public outrage and diplomatic unease between the two neighboring countries.
This development comes just days after reports emerged that several Kenyans had been detained in Tanzania following protests that turned violent. The incident had threatened to strain the long-standing relationship between the two nations.
Mudavadi urged both governments to uphold mutual respect and strengthen cooperation to avoid similar incidents in the future, emphasizing that East Africans should not be treated as foreigners in their own region.
As investigations continue, Kenyans are now watching closely to see whether those responsible for the unlawful detentions will be held accountable.
