President William Ruto’s upcoming attendance at the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) 20th anniversary celebrations in Mombasa has become one of the most talked-about political developments in Kenya this week.
The four-day event, scheduled from Thursday, November 13, to Sunday, November 16, is expected to bring together ODM’s founding members, senior leaders, and thousands of supporters from across the country.

His participation may also symbolize a message of national unity and reconciliation, especially after years of political competition between the Kenya Kwanza and Azimio coalitions.
The event will be graced by several prominent political figures, including former President Uhuru Kenyatta, Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, ODM founders Najib Balala and Charity Ngilu, Kisumu Governor Prof. Anyang’ Nyong’o, as well as a host of cabinet secretaries and former ministers.

This year’s anniversary is particularly emotional and symbolic as it marks the first celebration since the passing of Raila Odinga, ODM’s founding leader and one of Kenya’s most iconic political figures.

Over the four days, participants will review ODM’s 20-year journey, reaffirm its ideological foundations, and elect or confirm interim party officials. The programme will also focus on rebuilding grassroots networks across all 47 counties, ensuring ODM remains an active political force.
The celebrations will conclude with an interfaith thanksgiving service in honor of Raila Odinga, highlighting the themes of remembrance, unity, and continuity in Kenya’s ever-evolving political landscape.
