Fresh political heat is brewing in the Mt Kenya region after a close ally of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua sent a strong message aimed at leaders accused of dividing the mountain vote. Njohi, one of Gachagua’s most outspoken strategists, warned that anyone seen to be weakening the unity of Mt Kenya would be branded an enemy of the people’s cause, signalling a new wave of political realignment ahead of 2027.

In a statement shared on Facebook, Njohi insisted that for President William Ruto to be voted out, all “Molima” votes must be cast in one basket, adding that any attempt to split the mountain would backfire politically. He argued that the United Opposition already has Mt Kenya’s support, and no one should campaign in areas that have declared loyalty to the movement. Read his full post here.

Njohi’s remarks appear to indirectly target former president Uhuru Kenyatta and his Jubilee Party faction, which has recently resurfaced in central politics. The Gachagua camp believes that multiple political outfits in the region only serve to confuse voters and weaken the unity that once gave Mt Kenya its bargaining power at the national table.

Observers say Gachagua’s allies are laying the groundwork for the full rollout of the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), a new vehicle meant to rally the region under one voice. The move is seen as an attempt to seal the cracks that formed after Gachagua’s fallout with President Ruto and to position him as the undisputed kingpin of the mountain.

The renewed push for unity has, however, sparked fresh debate. Some Mt Kenya leaders allied to Jubilee insist that the region cannot be forced into one political basket, warning that Gachagua’s plan could backfire if it sidelines dissenting voices.

As the 2027 race takes shape, it’s clear that Mt Kenya will once again be the battleground to watch, with loyalty, survival, and political revenge all on the table.
