Residents of a Nairobi estate were left in shock and grief after a tragic incident in which a 5-year-old boy was killed by a school bus while playing near his home.
The heartbreaking accident occurred on Wednesday afternoon, sparking outrage and sorrow among family members and neighbors.
According to witnesses, the child was playing within the estate when the school bus, which had just dropped off pupils, ran over him.
The boy sustained severe injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital, but he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
His devastated mother, identified as Rupees, a local musician, could not hold back her pain as she recounted the horrific experience.
“When I saw him on that bed, my child was so crushed; that driver ensured he finished my child because he was crushed. It hurts so much, but what do I do?” she said in tears.
Police confirmed that the driver of the school bus was immediately arrested following the incident. The vehicle has since been impounded at Buruburu Police Station as investigations continue.
Authorities are expected to subject the driver to questioning and further legal procedures.
The tragic accident has ignited fresh debate on the safety of children within residential estates, especially in areas with heavy traffic from school and public service vehicles.
Concerned residents have urged schools and transport companies to exercise extreme caution when dropping off children in estates, emphasizing the need for designated play areas and stricter enforcement of traffic rules.
Meanwhile, Rupees and her family are left mourning the sudden loss of their young son, whose life was cut short in such a devastating manner.
The community has rallied around the grieving family, offering emotional and financial support as they prepare for burial arrangements.
