On Tuesday morning in Siaya County, learners of St. Stephen Usingo Secondary School protested against their school principal. The students accused the head of the school of mistreating them and making their learning environment difficult.
In their statement, the students said they are tired of the way the principal has been running the school.
According to them, he has been demanding money from students in unclear ways. They also claimed that he sometimes denies them food in the dining hall.
Many complained that the principal keeps sending them home regularly to bring more school fees, even when their parents have already paid. The learners said this has affected their studies and performance in class.
The students further revealed that the principal is also planning to chase away some of the teachers.
They said he wants to remain only with a few teachers who follow his “bad instructions” and do not question him. This, they added, has created fear among both students and teachers in the school.
The learners asked the government and the Ministry of Education to intervene quickly. They requested that a new principal be brought in, one who respects both students and teachers and puts the focus on academics.
According to them, this will help restore peace and create a better learning environment.
