NAIROBI, Kenya – For nearly three decades, 58-year-old Peter Mwangi had treated his birthdays like any other day — quiet, uneventful, and without much fuss. But on Saturday, that streak ended in the most emotional way, thanks to his daughter, Wanjiku, who pulled off a surprise celebration that left him teary-eyed and speechless.

Held at a small garden restaurant in Westlands, the party was attended by close friends, relatives, and a few former workmates who hadn’t seen Peter in years. The moment he walked in, thinking he was meeting his daughter for lunch, he was greeted by shouts of “Surprise!” and the sight of a giant cake shaped like a vintage radio — a nod to his youthful love for old-school music.

Peter, who last had a proper birthday party in 1997, admitted he had almost forgotten what it felt like to be the center of attention on his special day. “Back then, I was a young father hustling to provide for my family. Birthdays were for the kids, not for me,” he said, his voice cracking. “Today, my daughter reminded me that I still matter.”

The evening was filled with laughter, music from the ’90s, and emotional toasts. Wanjiku said the idea came after realizing her father’s sacrifices had left little room for self-celebration. “He’s always put everyone else first. I wanted him to have a day just for himself,” she said.

As the night wound down, Peter danced to his favorite hits, hugged every guest, and promised not to wait another 28 years for the next celebration. “This one,” he said with a smile, “I’ll remember forever.”
