Tensions are boiling over in Kenya as another police station goes up in flames, just days after the shocking torching of the Mawego Police Station in Homa Bay County.
This time, the Itibo Patrol Base in Bonyunyu, Nyamira County, was the target of public fury. On Tuesday, July 8, angry locals set the facility ablaze after police reportedly shot a 19-year-old student during a protest outside the local MCA’s office.
According to eyewitnesses, the demonstration began peacefully as students rallied over local grievances. But things took a dark turn when police were deployed to control the swelling crowd. In the ensuing chaos, a teenager was shot in the stomach, triggering a wave of outrage.
The wounded student was quickly rushed to the hospital, but the damage had already been done — emotionally and physically. Enraged by what they called “police brutality”, residents marched to the nearby patrol base and set it ablaze, leaving a trail of destruction and shock in their wake.
This marks the second police station to be torched within a week, raising serious questions about police conduct, public trust, and the rapidly escalating tensions between law enforcement and local communities.
