Madowo

CNN international correspondent Larry Madowo has publicly contradicted the Kenyan government’s version of events during the deadly June 25 protests, calling out what he described as “state-sponsored brutality.”

Taking to social media, Madowo accused security forces of using excessive force on unarmed protesters, revealing that journalists on the ground witnessed police directly instigating violence. His remarks come in sharp contrast to government statements lauding police for their “restraint and professionalism.”

“The official statement doesn’t match what we saw. Police provoked crowds, beat people, lobbed tear gas indiscriminately—and fired live rounds. At least sixteen people died,” Madowo stated.

The protests, fueled by mounting frustration over the Finance Bill 2025 and economic inequality, descended into chaos as footage surfaced showing police clashing violently with demonstrators across major towns.

Despite the Interior Ministry and government-aligned officials insisting that law enforcement acted within legal bounds to maintain order, numerous local and international human rights groups have documented disturbing accounts. Videos reveal officers chasing protesters into residential estates, dragging civilians from hiding spots, and, in some instances, allegedly firing into crowds.

Kenya Human Rights Commission has demanded an independent inquiry, warning that impunity among security forces threatens democratic freedoms.

“The blood of innocent Kenyans stains this government’s claim of order,” one protester told international press.

As the backlash intensifies, Madowo’s bold stance adds pressure on authorities to come clean. With global media watching and citizens mourning, the government’s credibility is under the spotlight—and the truth may prove impossible to suppress.
