The family of the late blogger Albert Ojwang is in distress after claiming they lost over KSh 500,000 meant for his burial.
The money, reportedly raised through comedian Eric Omondi’s Sisi kwa Sisi initiative, is said to have vanished from his father’s M-Pesa account under mysterious circumstances.
Ojwang died while in police custody, triggering national outrage and a massive outpouring of support. Thousands of Kenyans contributed to assist the grieving family with burial arrangements and related expenses.
However, speaking in a video shared by YouTuber Clinton Chirangah Shim, Ojwang’s uncle, Polycarp Odhiambo, alleged that the money had been withdrawn without consent.
According to him, the funds disappeared when Ojwang’s father, Meshack Opiyo, attempted to make a withdrawal but was hindered by lack of identification. When he visited Safaricom for help, he found not only was the KSh 500,000 gone, but even his personal KSh 17,000 had been wiped out.
“They checked the statement and saw names of people who withdrew the funds,” Odhiambo said. “That money was meant for my nephew’s burial. Now we are left in shock and pain.”
The grieving father, captured in the video leaning back in tears, appeared deeply shaken by the revelation.
This incident mirrors another case tied to Sisi kwa Sisi, where Boniface Kariuki’s family claimed they were conned out of KSh 200,000 by fraudsters pretending to help with government health registration.
Efforts by TUKO.co.ke to reach Eric Omondi for comment were unsuccessful by the time of publishing.
The incident has sparked widespread reactions on social media, with many Kenyans demanding accountability and transparency in handling funds meant for bereaved families.
