Get ready for a shift in the way secondary education works. Starting January 2026, boarding schools across Kenya will be opening their doors to day scholars. This comes from new rules set by the Ministry of Education, as reported by The Saturday Standard, and is all about getting ready for the first group of Grade 10 students under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).

The new rules include a few key points:

Day Student Spots: Every boarding school will need to have at least 10% of its students as day scholars. This is to help with overcrowding and create a more balanced learning environment.

Less Crowding: The goal is to ease the pressure on boarding schools, which often struggle with having enough space.

More Kids in School: This change supports the plan to get every student into senior secondary school, making sure everyone gets a chance to learn.

“Day Wings” Idea: The idea is to separate how many students a school takes from how many beds it has, which has been a problem for a while.

The Ministry of Education, working with the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD), believes this will help:

Use What We Have: By including day students, schools can make better use of their resources and facilities.

Change the Story: The Ministry wants to show that day students can do just as well as boarders, challenging the idea that boarders always do better.

As the education system prepares for this change, adding day students to boarding schools is a big step towards making education more accessible and fair. This move is all about making the learning environment better for everyone.

The Ministry of Education is clearly working to improve education, and these upcoming changes are set to make a real difference in secondary schools across the country.
