72-year-old former Uganda ethics minister Hon. Miria Matembe was finally granted bail at Luzira Magistrate’s Grade One Court after being charged with promoting sectarianism.
Maria Matembe was one of the main opposition leaders that did not hold her words back when talking against the government of President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.
She was also bold enough when talking against the abductions being committed by Uganda’s Army Chief Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba.
However, she reached a point where she became a target of the regime for her own words.
Security officers reportedly raided her home in Luzira while looking for her, but she was not there.
The look for her did not stop but just alerted her family that she was being looked for, something that forced her into hiding.
Two days later, she was unlucky as security officers arrested her at a friend’s house and took her to be presented before court.
The arrest surprised many Ugandans who did not think the regime would even abduct very old people, most especially a vulnerable woman like Matembe.
To many, a 72-year-old was not someone they saw as worth arresting, but it soon became a reality after days of her not being around.
Matembe’s husband, family, and relatives called out for her whereabouts but did not receive any answer until Gen. Muhoozi took responsibility for her abduction.
Two days ago, she was presented before court, ending all the worries they had about her disappearance, and yesterday she was finally granted bail.
