Former Chief Justice David Maraga says the 2027 General Election should be viewed as a contest between President William Ruto and the people of Kenya.

He spoke as political leaders position themselves for the next election, with debate growing around the economy, public spending, corruption and the conduct of the polls.

“The 2027 election is a contest between Ruto and the people of Kenya,” he said, presenting the vote as an opportunity for citizens to assess the President’s record.

The United Green Movement co-leader says voters should focus on leadership, accountability and public resources. He has called for opposition leaders to agree on one presidential candidate, while insisting Kenyans should decide who represents them.

His remarks come amid calls for electoral reforms. On October 27, Maraga and members of the People’s Coalition on Electoral Reforms raised concerns about the 2027 vote and urged Parliament to consider proposals on counting, tallying and announcing results.

The coalition wants votes counted and declared at polling stations, with results made public to strengthen confidence in the process. These remain proposals advanced by the group. The group says these steps would help build public confidence.

The debate is unfolding as political camps organise ahead of the August 2027 election. Ruto is seeking another term, while opposition figures continue discussions about cooperation and a possible joint candidate.

Maraga, who served as Chief Justice from 2016 to 2021, has made the fight against corruption and respect for the Constitution central to his political message.

His statement places voters at the centre of the coming contest, rather than treating the election as a battle between political leaders alone.
