Her love for gemstones endeared her to her people way before she plunged into the murky world of politics in 2017.

At only 26 years, Majala Mlagui stormed Taita Taveta County politics in style when she ran alongside Granton Samboja on a Wiper Party ticket and pulled a shocker in the region.

At the time no one gave the pair a chance against the incumbent John Mruttu and ODM party candidate Thomas Mwadeghu, Samboja and Mlagui pulled an upset when they won the race.

By becoming Deputy Governor at only 26 years, Mlagui became the youngest holder of the office in the history of Kenya. The record stands to date.

But in the run up to the 2022 general, Mlagui fell out with Samboja and the two former allies went towards different directions.

Whereas Samboja defended his seat on a Jubilee Party ticket, his erstwhile deputy remained in Wiper Party and threw the hat in the ring by running for the Mwatate MP seat following the decision by the incumbent to run for Taita Taveta County Governor position.

Both Samboja and Mlagui were defeated. Should they have remained together in Wiper Party? Perhaps, had they contested on a joint ticket just as they had done in 2017, perhaps things would have been different.
