Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has weighed in on the ongoing debate surrounding the proposal to create a Prime Minister position, which many Kenya Kwanza leaders believe should be awarded to Raila Odinga. This discussion comes amid growing calls for the enactment of the NADCO report, which envisions a Prime Minister role as part of governance reforms.

Speaking on the matter, Gachagua advised Raila against accepting such an offer, arguing that it would be a significant downgrade for a man who has vied for the presidency five times. He pointed out that Raila, having spent decades in the political arena fighting for democracy, should not settle for anything less than the presidency.

“How can a man who has contested for the presidency five times settle for a Prime Minister position? That is lowering yourself. Raila only has two optionsā€”either he goes for the presidency again or retires in dignity,” Gachagua asserted.

His remarks come at a time when some Kenya Kwanza leaders are pushing for the implementation of the NADCO report, which could create new positions in government. There has been speculation that President William Ruto’s administration might be willing to accommodate Raila with a Prime Minister role as a form of political settlement following his unsuccessful bid for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship.
