In a statement he previously made on Friday, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua claimed that President William Ruto had instructed Inspector General of Police (IG) Douglas Kanja, also known as to ensure that police officers are not engaging in criminal activities or being used by politicians to cause mayhem.
Gachagua stressed that the police should remain neutral and serve the public without interference from political interests.
However, on Saturday, Gachagua continued his attacks on IG Kanja, questioning why he had seemingly surrendered the command of the National Police Service (NPS) to politicians.
He expressed concern that police officers were being used to escort groups of goons who create chaos during political meetings.
Gachagua said, “Why are you allowing politicians to control our police officers while they use them to disrupt public gatherings?”
In another statement, Gachagua directly addressed IG Kanja, saying that he is not truly in charge of the NPS.
He accused politicians of taking over the control of the police service and demanded to know why the Inspector General was allowing this to happen.
“The people who are really in charge of the National Police Service right now are politicians, not you,” he remarked.
Gachagua also called for accountability regarding the recent attack on his political meeting in Kirinyanga.
He stated that those responsible for the incident should be held accountable by the IG and warned against political interference in police operations.
