Following the death of global marathon record holder Kelvin Kiptum in a car accident, Sebastian Coe, President of Global Athletics, released a statement.

Coe stated that it was difficult to accept the young marathoner’s unexpected passing, particularly as it occurred just a few days after his record was confirmed.

“We are shocked and deeply saddened to learn of the devastating loss of Kelvin Kiptum and his coach, Gervais Hakizimana.

On behalf of all World Athletics, we send our deepest condolences to their families, friends, teammates, and the Kenyan nation,” Coe said.

Coe recalled how he recently ratified the world record set by Kiptum in the Chicago Marathon last October. “It was only earlier this week in Chicago, the place where Kelvin set his extraordinary marathon World Record, that I was able to officially ratify his historic time. An incredible athlete leaving an incredible legacy, and we will miss him dearly,” he added

On Sunday, February 11, Kiptum and his Rwandan coach, Gervais Hakizimana, perished in an accident.

Kenyans and the whole world continue to send their messages of condolences to the family. led by the Kenyan president, President Willam Samoei Ruto described him as the future of the country and the entire world sporting fraternity because of his unmatched mental resilience.
