A shocking incident took place on Thursday in Kolong village, Emgwen constituency, Nandi County, as a woman identified only as Cheptoo reportedly took the law into her own hands by killing a man she claims defiled her two-year-old daughter.
The Kamombo Patrol Base, alerted by the local chief, received the distressing news initially through a phone call in which Cheptoo confessed to the alleged crime. Swift action was required, and officers from Kamombo rushed to the scene, only to find themselves confronted by an angry mob that had surrounded Cheptoo, demanding her blood.
Citizen Digital interviewed Nandi Central Sub-County Police Commander, David Anyir, who described the hostile situation officers encountered upon arrival. The mob’s aggression necessitated urgent backup, leading to a call for reinforcements from the nearby Kapsabet Police Station. The combined forces of Kamombo and Kapsabet officers eventually managed to extract Cheptoo from the clutches of the furious mob, although not without resistance. The mob damaged the patrol vehicle’s windscreen in their attempt to prevent the woman’s rescue. Tragically, during this ordeal, Cheptoo’s house was set ablaze, exacerbating an already tense situation.
At present, the authorities are faced with the challenge of retrieving the deceased individual’s body. Police have requested the intervention of the area’s chief to negotiate the release of the remains, though this has yet to occur as of the time of writing. Meanwhile, Cheptoo, nursing injuries sustained during the mob’s assault, is currently receiving medical treatment at Kapsabet Referral Hospital. Legal action awaits her once her condition stabilizes.
This distressing incident serves as a reminder of the gravity of child abuse cases and the desperate measures some individuals resort to in their quest for justice. The local community and authorities will undoubtedly seek answers and justice for all parties involved in this tragic event.
