Winnie Byanyima, the wife of Ugandan opposition leader Kizza Besigye, has swiftly denied any involvement in the leak of an alleged birth certificate for Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the son of President Yoweri Museveni.
The document, which circulated widely on social media, claimed that Muhoozi was born in 1974 at Loitokitok General Hospital in Kenya, with details about his parents that raised eyebrows and sparked a frenzy online.
The certificate, which was linked to Winnie by some social media users, allegedly showed that Muhoozi’s father was Yoseri Tubuhaburwa Rutabwasirwa, a name that references Museveni’s full name, and his mother as Hope Rwaheru, purportedly from Burahya, Uganda.
The controversy surrounding the document intensified after Muhoozi himself responded, stirring up tensions by alleging that his father’s relationship with Byanyima had disrupted his family’s peace in the past.
In an effort to put the rumors to rest, Winnie Byanyima took to Twitter to clarify her position, stating, “Indeed, I have nothing to do with this document.” She expressed her innocence, distancing herself from the allegations that had recently surfaced.
Byanyima, who has become more vocal on social media, especially as her husband faces continued imprisonment, faced public scrutiny not only due to the leaked certificate but also because of Muhoozi’s inflammatory comments about her past involvement with Museveni.
Muhoozi’s Twitter post earlier ignited further controversy, where he referred to Winnie as a “home wrecker” and claimed that she was forcefully removed from Museveni’s household in December 1986.
This personal revelation was met with anger and disbelief by many Ugandans, who found it distasteful for Muhoozi to air such private family matters publicly.
Despite the ongoing drama, Winnie Byanyima remains firm in her denials, with social media users expressing mixed reactions. Some supported her, while others questioned the authenticity of the leaked certificate and its implications.
