The former Malkia Striker player and celebrated volleyball queen died while undergoing treatment in hospital. In his condolence message on Friday, December 27, the president described Wanja as a gifted and disciplined volleyball star who served the cause of our country’s sports with honour and dedication.
“Janet Wanja, a gifted and disciplined volleyball star, served the cause of our country’s sports with honour and dedication. She was focused, hardworking and a team player,” President Ruto said. In his message, the head of state expressed hope that one day, the country will defeat cancer, a disease that led to Wanja’s death.
“May it be comfort to her family, friends and the wider sports fraternity that we are praying for them at this tough and difficult time. One day, we will beat cancer. Rest in Peace, Wanja,” the president said.
What happened to Wanja?
Wanja was recently diagnosed with gallbladder cancer, and Kenyans were very concerned about her treatment.
When the news of her diagnosis became public, messages of support started pouring in from across the globe, with fans, teammates, and colleagues expressing hope for her recovery. Through her brother, footballer Kevin Kimani, the family requested emotional support from Kenyans. Wanja is celebrated for her stellar volleyball career and role as a fitness trainer for Kenya’s national team. She was the “Best Setter” at the 2007 African Championship and represented Kenya at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens.
