Kenyan politics is never static, and President William Ruto’s recent actions suggest a deliberate effort to reconcile with former President Uhuru Kenyatta. The reasons behind this move are tied to Mt. Kenya’s shifting political landscape, key alliances, and upcoming elections.
During the 2022 elections, Ruto was the darling of Mt. Kenya, securing massive support from the region. However, growing discontent among Mt. Kenya leaders and voters has left Ruto vulnerable. Uhuru Kenyatta, despite his fallout with Ruto, still commands significant influence in the region. If Uhuru can bring Mt. Kenya back to Ruto’s side, it would boost Ruto’s chances in the 2027 elections.
Another factor is Fred Matiang’i, an ally of Uhuru Kenyatta, who is rumored to be eyeing the presidency in 2027. Matiang’i has gained admiration from many Kenyans, and with Uhuru’s backing, he could pose a serious threat to Ruto’s re-election. By courting Uhuru, Ruto might not only neutralize Matiang’i’s bid but also maintain control over Mt. Kenya politics.

The impeachment of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has added to Ruto’s challenges in the region. Many of Ruto’s allies who supported the impeachment are facing backlash, making it difficult for them to campaign in Mt. Kenya. This has weakened Ruto’s position. Working with Uhuru could help repair relationships and stabilize his support base.

Jubilee Party’s leadership also plays a key role in this political chess game. Uhuru recently reclaimed his position as Jubilee leader, giving him leverage in Mt. Kenya. Ruto’s initial push to control Jubilee may have been aimed at curbing the influence of rival leaders like Matiang’i. By aligning with Uhuru, Ruto could secure Jubilee’s support and block any opposition from within Mt. Kenya.
Mutahi Kagwe, another prominent figure from Nyeri and a former minister in Kibaki and Uhuru’s governments, has been suggested as a potential ally for Ruto. Mathira MP Eric Wamumbi recently hinted on social media that Kagwe could work with Ruto’s government. This could be a strategic move to appease Nyeri voters, especially after Rigathi Gachagua’s impeachment. Kagwe’s appointment could signal a fresh start and help cool political tensions in the region.
Ruto’s efforts to work with Uhuru Kenyatta appear to be part of a broader strategy to regain Mt. Kenya’s trust, neutralize potential challengers, and solidify his position ahead of 2027.
