The Speaker of the National Assembly Moses Wetangula found himself in hot water after comments he made during a church service sparked controversy regarding the impeachment motion against Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. The service in Machakos County saw Wetangula echo sentiments that appeared to favor Gachagua’s ousting, a stance that was met with fierce opposition in the Assembly. On Tuesday, as the National Assembly convened to discuss the impeachment motion brought forth by Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse, tensions ran high. Marakwet West MP Toroitich Timothy Kipchumba voiced his concerns over Wetangula’s ability to preside over the proceedings impartially. “We need to give the DP a fair hearing,” Kipchumba argued, emphasizing that Wetangula’s earlier statements indicated a clear bias. He called for both the Speaker and the Deputy Speaker to recuse themselves, stating, “It would not be in order for you to remain involved.”

Wetangula, faced with the pressure, swiftly changed his tune. In an attempt to clarify his position, he insisted on his neutrality. “I resonate with the summons made at the church service,” he explained, invoking scripture from the book of Mark 9:38. He quoted the priest’s homily, which denounced the wickedness in society, stating that it was not his personal opinion but a reflection of biblical teachings. “If the wicked are cast into the sea with a stone around their necks, that’s not my doing,” Wetangula clarified. He stressed that he would uphold fairness and due process throughout the impeachment proceedings.Despite his reassurances, the atmosphere in the Assembly remained charged. The impeachment motion, which outlined over ten allegations against Gachagua, including corruption and constitutional breaches, had garnered significant support, with Mutuse presenting a staggering 291 signatures from MPs—far exceeding the required 117 to initiate the process.Wetangula, navigating this political minefield, granted Gachagua the opportunity to defend himself before the House on October 8. He also announced a public participation initiative across all 47 counties, allowing citizens to voice their opinions on the matter. “We are committed to ensuring that all voices are heard in this crucial decision,” Wetangula affirmed, attempting to reassure both his colleagues and the public of his commitment to justice.

As the political landscape continued to shift beneath him, Wetangula’s handling of the impeachment motion would not only define his leadership but also set a precedent for future proceedings in the National Assembly. With the stakes higher than ever, all eyes were now on the forthcoming session, where the fate of Deputy President Gachagua would be determined.
