In a surprising political development, long-standing adversaries Kiraitu Murungi, Peter Munya, and Mithika Linturi have set aside their differences to address the escalating political instability in Meru County. This unexpected alliance was solidified during a late-night meeting held at a Meru Member of Parliament’s residence in Karen, Nairobi, on February 18, 2025.

The convergence of these political heavyweights, along with 47 Members of County Assembly (MCAs), several Members of Parliament, Njuri Ncheke elders, and opinion leaders, underscores the gravity of the situation in Meru. The county has been mired in turmoil since the impeachment of Governor Kawira Mwangaza in August 2024. Although Mwangaza remains in office under a court order halting the Senate’s resolution to remove her, the prolonged uncertainty has significantly stalled development and governance in the region.

The meeting, which notably occurred just minutes away from Deputy President Kithure Kindiki’s official residence, was reportedly convened to deliberate on strategies to restore stability and progress in Meru. The leaders expressed concerns that the ongoing political wrangles have detrimentally affected service delivery and development projects, necessitating a unified approach to resolve the impasse.

This alliance marks a significant shift in Meru’s political landscape. Historically, Murungi, Munya, and Linturi have been fierce competitors, each vying for supremacy in the county’s political arena. Their decision to collaborate reflects a pragmatic recognition that collective action is essential to address the challenges facing their constituents.

As Meru awaits the court’s ruling on Governor Mwangaza’s impeachment, scheduled for March 14, 2025, the unified stance of these leaders offers a glimmer of hope for a resolution to the county’s political crisis. Their collaboration signifies a potential turning point, prioritizing the welfare of Meru’s residents over individual political ambitions.
