Douglas Kanja Kirocho, the nominee for the position of Inspector General of Police, was recently confirmed for appointment by the National Assembly Committee. (Photo courtesy) Despite the National Assembly’s ratification of his appointment as the new Inspector General of Police nearly three weeks ago, President William Ruto has yet to formally appoint the former GSU commandant.

At the height of the Gen Z anti-government protests in July 2024, President William Ruto nominated Kanja for the IG position that became vacant following the resignation of Japheth Koome. Kanja was the Deputy Inspector General of Police in command of the Kenya Police Service wing before being nominated as the new police chief. He had previously held the position of commandant of the General Service Unit.

Prior to that, he served as the deputy head of the GSU. However, Kanja has not yet assumed office, despite being vetted and confirmed for appointment by the National Assembly Committee on security and administration. For what reason? Gilbert Masengeli, the Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of the Administration Police, has been operating as the Inspector General for nearly two months.

However, speculation regarding the delay in the swearing-in of the new IG has arisen due to the fact that the formal appointment of Kanja has not yet been completed by the Head of State.
