Just like his predecessors, immediate former Inspector General of Police Japheth Koome could make a comeback into the public service in the future appointments by President William Ruto.

Koome resigned from his top post in July 2024, just a day after President Ruto dismissed his entire cabinet.

But if the past trend of top police chiefs being reappointed to other positions is anything to go by, then Koome has every reason to be optimistic that he will be considered for a top job by Ruto.

In the past, former Police Commissioner Major General ( Rtd) Hussein Ali was appointed as Postmaster General by the then President Mwai Kibaki after leaving as police chief.

Then came Mathews Iteere, who was also appointed as the board chairperson of the Nyayo Tea Zones after leaving as police chief.

Iteere’s successor, David Kimaiyo was appointed as board chairperson of the Kenya Airports Authority and later Kenyatta National Hospital after leaving his post as IG.

On the other hand, after leaving office as Inspector General of Police in 2019, Joseph Boinett was appointed as Tourism Chief Administrative Secretary by President Uhuru Kenyatta. He is now serving as Ruto’s deputy security advisor.

Save for Hillary Mutyambai, all recent police chiefs made comeback into public service after leaving Jogoo House. As such, Koome is one man to watch keenly in Ruto’s next top government appointments.
