Whitney Njoki, a Form One student, was pronounced dead shortly after being transported to the hospital on Thursday afternoon and the cause of her death remains a mystery.

According to her father, Mr. Peter Wanaina, the school called him and told him to come to the campus as soon as possible without giving any details.

The headmistress then had him call her once he arrived in Njoro Town, where he was informed to go straight to the hospital instead of the school. Unfortunately, the doctor taking care of Whitney broke the news to Mr Wanaina that she had passed away.

As a father, Mr. Wanaina is understandably seeking answers as to what happened to his daughter.

There were no red flags in her school health records when she was brought in, and she was perfectly healthy.

Whitney had been enrolled in the school on February 7 and was due to be absent from classes from March 15 until her return on April 1.

The family was anxiously waiting for her to come home for the holiday break, and they were not informed of any illness during her month- long stay at the school.

Jeremiah Gichia, Whitney’s uncle, said his brother called him terrified, asking him to rush to the Njoro hospital, as his daughter had died under unclear circumstances.

Whitney’s mother, Ms. Irine Kagiri, said that she had not seen her daughter since February and was looking forward to picking her up on Wednesday for the half- term holiday.

She was informed by the school that Whitney had complained about tonsil pain on Thursday morning and was taken to the hospital as her condition deteriorated, but sadly she did not survive.

“She was a bright and polite student. When I viewed her body there was blood in her mouth and nose. The school claimed that she had tonsils. Does that cause bleeding? I don’t believe them. We will conduct a postmortem to know the cause of death,” she said.

He said they were asked to report the matter to the police, which they did, vide OB 40/9/3/2023, and were given permission to move the body to Egerton University mortuary.
