Deputy President Hon Riggy Gachagua on Wednesday displayed his political clout in the Mt Kenya region as he addressed a massive rally in Mathira in Nyeri where he hosted a Christmas Party. The second in command challenged former President Uhuru Kenyatta and ex-Mungiki leader Maina Njenga to stop their attempts to divide and mislead the youth of the region.
Gachagua accused the former president of being behind the formation of the Mt Kenya Youth Caucus, a group that claims to represent the interests of the young people in the region. He also alleged that Maina Njenga, who was once the leader of the notorious Mungiki sect, was being used by some politicians to revive the outlawed group and cause chaos and insecurity.
“Hivi karibuni wanajaribu kuamka. Yule kiongozi wao alikuwa anapakwa mafuta, anapelekwa kwa tv anavalishwa 3-piece suit na anapakwa powder ati ndio tuweze kukubali yeye kama kiongozi… msikuje kuingizwa kwa hizo vikundi haramu, ambaye ni ya kukiuka sharia, ni ya kuja kufanya madhara kwa mama wetu na wafanyibiahsra wetu,” Gachagua warned.
The deputy president urged the residents of Mt Kenya to rally behind his candidature, saying that he was the only leader who could deliver on the promises of development, unity, and prosperity. He also thanked them for their overwhelming support and turnout, saying that they had shown that Mt Kenya was firmly behind him.
The rally was attended by over 8,000 locals, as well as several MPs and MCAs allied with the deputy president. Gachagua said that he would continue to tour the region and other parts of the country to drum up support for his bid.
