A group of leaders from Western Kenya has strongly condemned the verbal attack on Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya by National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah during a political event last Friday.
Speaking at a press conference in Kitale, the leaders accused Ichung’wah of disrespect and unwarranted personal attacks that they believe undermine efforts toward unity and development in the region. They emphasized the need for leaders to foster dialogue and avoid divisive rhetoric.
“We cannot allow our leaders to be targeted for speaking out on issues that affect our people. Governor Natembeya has every right to voice his concerns, and such attacks only derail the development agenda,” said Saboti MP Caleb Amisi.
The leaders lauded Natembeya’s track record in championing infrastructure development, healthcare improvements, and youth empowerment initiatives in Trans Nzoia. They highlighted that such progress should not be overshadowed by political disputes.
“Governor Natembeya has been instrumental in transforming Trans Nzoia, and his leadership speaks for itself. Personal attacks are unnecessary and serve no constructive purpose,” added Kiminini MP Bisau Kakai.
The confrontation between Ichung’wah and Natembeya stemmed from the governor’s outspoken criticism of certain national government policies, which he argued were disadvantaging counties. Ichung’wah responded by accusing Natembeya of engaging in “petty politics” and undermining national unity.
In their statement, Western Kenya leaders urged President William Ruto to intervene and encourage his allies to embrace tolerance and respect when addressing differences with county leaders.
As political temperatures rise ahead of the 2027 elections, the leaders called for restraint, stressing the importance of collaboration between national and county governments to enhance service delivery.
