On December 2, 2024, Cabinet Secretary Hassan Joho issued a strong statement addressing Kenyans who criticize the Kenya Kwanza government on social media platforms.

Speaking candidly, Joho emphasized that nation-building cannot be achieved through online platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok.

“A country cannot be built through the internet. It cannot be built by people whose work revolves around Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok,” he said.

Joho’s remarks seemed to target individuals and groups that frequently use social media to voice their discontent with the government.

The CS further issued a stern warning to critics, saying that the government is capable of responding to provocations. “Let me put them on notice. We can also talk. If they bring us trouble, we can also bring trouble,” Joho declared.

His comments suggest that the government will not shy away from countering its detractors if necessary.

This statement has sparked debate among Kenyans, with some supporting his stance on focusing on practical development efforts, while others view his words as an attempt to suppress free speech.

Social media has become a critical tool for holding leaders accountable, and many citizens feel such warnings could undermine democratic dialogue.

Joho’s remarks are expected to fuel further discussions on the role of social media in governance and accountability.
