Willis Raburu recently shared his experiences regarding the challenges he faced after transitioning from short hair to dreadlocks while working at Citizen TV. In an interview, he revealed that this change in hairstyle did not sit well with some individuals in his professional circle, leading to significant pressure for him to conform to traditional expectations.
Raburu disclosed that some people even approached SK Macharia, the chairman of Royal Media Services, urging him to fire Raburu because of his dreadlocks. However, Macharia’s response was supportive. He told Raburu to continue with his work since the most important thing was that he was working and delivering. This affirmation from Macharia gave Raburu the confidence to disregard the negative opinions surrounding his hairstyle.
Despite facing stigma from friends and family who were initially concerned about his new look, Raburu found that he continued to receive job opportunities. He maintained his dreadlocks for two years before eventually deciding to cut them. Raburu emphasized the importance of staying true to oneself, stating that many people tried to define him based on his appearance, but he refused to let those labels limit his identity or career.
Ultimately, his story serves as a reminder of the importance of self-acceptance and the supportive role of mentors in navigating workplace challenges.
